Cyber Norms at the International Cyber Security Summer School 2019

Summer School

From 25 to 30 August 2019, the 5th edition of the International Cyber Security Summer School took place in The Hague. We hosted two days of the summer school program at the Wijnhaven building of Leiden University's Campus Den Haag for 60 participants of 22 different nationalities and with backgrounds in technology, policy and law.

We hosted the welcome activities and a cyber security game set by Leila Taghizadeh from Euroclear on Sunday, followed on Monday by a lecture from prof.dr. Bibi van den Berg on security and cyberspace, and a workshop by dr. Els De Busser, who challenged the participants to come up with a resolution how an incident as NotPetya could in future be prevented, mitigated or responded to, and present their resolution to the (fictional) International Board of Cyberspace.

The rest of the program involved activities organized by NATO's Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), EY, Europol, the Hague Security Delta and the Dutch Innovation Factory. During the entire week, the summer school participants also worked on solving in teams one of the challenges set by several of the participating partners. The challenge set by us was on cyber norms.

On the final day, each group presented their ideas to tackle the various challenges to a jury at the Dutch Innovation Factory in Zoetermeer. The winners all received a free conference pass to our 2019 Conference on Cyber Norms: Dealing with Uncertainty, taking place on 5-6 November 2019, presented by Liisi Adamson.
