Monica Kaminska at ACE-CSR Winter School

Early-Career Researcher Talk

Our postdoctoral researcher Monica Kaminska is giving an early-career researcher talk at the ACE-CSR (Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research) 2020 PhD and Early Career Researcher Winter School on 14 December 2020.

Monica Kaminska will discuss how responding proportionately to hostile cyber operations has proven difficult for some states. While damaging and disruptive, cyber attacks to date have not yet crossed the threshold of armed attack. There is a vibrant scholarly debate on whether cyber activity should be understood within the framework of espionage operations or war and conflict, or form an entirely new category of its own. The framework within which cyber activity is understood may have important political, legal, and normative implications for responses. This talk will discuss the challenges states face in responding to cyber attacks and give an overview of how countries (including members of the Five Eyes Alliance)have been responding to date. It will seek to highlight areas where further academic work is needed and indicate how technological innovations, such as advancements in AI, might raise new and urgent questions for scholars.

The UK Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research – 2020 PhD and Early Career Researcher Winter School will be held from 14 to 16 December 2020, for researchers in the centres, particularly early-career researchers, post-doctoral research assistants and PhD students.
